Empowering Communities with Sustainable Water Solutions
WaterAid / Nonprofit Sector
Background
As a leader in ensuring access to clean drinking water, WaterAid India works tirelessly across the country to improve water security and sanitation. With a special focus on the states of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, WaterAid India has partnered in transformative initiatives like the Women + Water Alliance. Their efforts, particularly in communities impacted by the apparel industry, have been a lifeline since 2019, significantly improving health and well-being for women and their families. Collaborating with the Jal Jeevan Mission, WaterAid has worked closely with government departments to bring lasting, positive change to these regions.
The Brief
WaterAid India’s goal was clear: to amplify the impact of clean water initiatives and strengthen local community governance around water security and quality. By supporting the Jal Jeevan Mission’s objectives, WaterAid aimed to empower communities with the resources, knowledge, and tools to manage their water supply sustainably and independently.

The Work
In partnership with the Women + Water Alliance, USAID, and Gap Inc., WaterAid India launched an inspiring awareness campaign that led to the creation of the “Women + Water Alliance Case Studies Book.” This booklet, featuring powerful stories of local women leaders, captures how they are transforming water security in their communities. It highlights the role of these women in driving grassroots change and showcases the impact of collective action for water quality and accessibility.
To address sanitation challenges, WaterAid India also developed the "Grey Water Management Module Book" in Hindi. This booklet offers essential guidelines for greywater management, enabling communities to adopt sustainable practices for improved hygiene.
Furthermore, the “Operation and Maintenance of PWSS Book” was created to support local community representatives in effectively managing village piped water supply schemes. Developed in collaboration with the Har Ghar Jal - Jal Jeevan Mission and the Madhya Pradesh government, this comprehensive manual provides valuable insights into maintaining and operating water systems, particularly for Single Village Schemes, empowering communities to sustain access to clean, safe water.
The Impact
WaterAid India’s initiatives have strengthened water security and sanitation across numerous communities. The Women + Water Alliance booklet has become an essential resource, inspiring local leaders to champion water security initiatives. Communities now have access to guidelines and modules on greywater management, improving hygiene and reducing waterborne illnesses. The PWSS manual has equipped community representatives with the skills to manage and maintain piped water systems, ensuring the longevity of these vital resources.
Through these projects, WaterAid India has not only expanded access to safe water but also fostered resilience and self-sufficiency in communities across Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Their work continues to transform lives, creating a ripple effect of empowerment and sustainable water solutions across India.
